Stout was involved in the Gemini and Apollo programs as an information scientist responsible for tracking launch vehicle and spacecraft components. After the Apollo 1 fire, Stout and his wife, Helen (d.2014), founded the Apollo Prayer League in 1968 as a NASA employees group that would pray for the astronauts' safety. The nonprofit was launched under the auspices of Faith Presbyterian Church of Pasadena, Texas. Fulfilling a goal set by the League, Apollo 14 lunar pilot Edgar Mitchell carried a packet of 100 microfiche bibles to the moon in his personal preference kit and returned them to Stout in April 1971. Some of the bibles were gifted intact, while others were cut into 50-page segments and presented to members of the Apollo Prayer League. Stout was awarded an Apollo Achievement Award for his work during the Apollo program.
